Ever heard hydrocephalus or not at all?

Hydrocephalus is a condition in which there are too many in the ventricular CSF. Ventricles enlarge to accommodate the extra fluid and then tap on different parts of the brain, causing a number of different symptoms.

The cause of hydrocephalus is possible etiologic factors including head injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, meningitis, and CNS tumors. Hydrocephalus is usually the result of brain infections or abnormalities in the fetus before birth. The treatment is by surgical operation for hydrocephalus. Usually, such an operation consists of insertion of derivation ventricular, which transports side excesses of liquid of the ventricles in the cavity peritoneal.

A less common procedure is insertion of a ventriculoatrial shunt, the flow of fluid from the brain into the lateral ventricle of heart right atrium, where the fluid make its way into the venous circulation. Periodic renewal of shunt needed to accommodate growth in children. A shunt is clogged damaged must be replaced and  hydrocephalus treatment can lead to better risk mental and physical development. Do not be afraid to ask your doctor, nurse or therapist about your child’s care. If treatment includes medication, be sure your child takes it as your doctor ordered.
